The Gladiator utility rail kit turned out great! Part of the challenge was that standard strut channel wasn't the right depth, nor did the slots/holes line up well or at all. I ended up having to custom order 2000ft of plain steel extrusion and then cut it to length and cut the correct bolt pattern, but the finished product is fantastic. We finished each piece with a durable black texture powdercoat inside and out and have custom injection-molded plastic caps for each end of each rail.
Here were the goals:
– Fit using only the factory-provided mounting features in the bed
– Match the depth of the Mopar kit, so that most/all accessories would fit both systems
– Allow accessories to be easily attached without sliding a t-slot nut in from one end
Functionally, the strut channel characteristics are fantastic. Strut channel hardware can be used for easy installation and configuration of attachments and accessories.
Great customer service and item shipped quickly! Easy install!
So for the most part this is pretty awesome. A couple of things I think would make this better. 1. Either let people know if their bed has a spray-on bed liner, that you will need to clean out the holes a little before you can bolt the rails to the bed, (and instructions on how) OR even better include a tap to thread the hole. 2. This is described as a replacement for the MOPAR version. The design is completely different and therefore the tie downs that you would use with the MOPAR version don't work on this one. The aftermarket ones for the Tocama sort of work, but I would feel better if the support that keeps the anchor from coming out was a little larger. (the open space in the rails is pretty wide compared to the anchor. I added a washer to increase the surface area of the support bolt. 3. Ideally Builtright would make their own version of tie-downs/anchors that work with this rail system. All that being said since this is sort of a DIY aftermarket option, this is a great value compared to the cost of the MOPAR version. Gregg
Thanks for the feedback, Gregg! The points that you mention are excellent and are actually all things that were considered during development. Unfortunately, each of them increases the cost/price of the kit to a point where the MOPAR kit makes more sense. Our goal here was to keep the price low. That being said, we'll soon offer a tie down kit that will resolve issues #2 and #3. Keep an eye out! - Matt
Gladiator bed rails. Awesome.!!!! Shipped/arrived fast. Installation almost painless. Fit is spot on!..and btw Tacoma cleats do work.but the nuts on back are shorter width.kinda wonky fit.but they work. Awaiting built rightmetal cleats I will be ordering them. Great product great service!
